PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

Issue at hand: Inconsistent and unreliable scheduling. Currently, the policy is to receive our  schedules two weeks in advance, however, we sometimes do not get our schedules until the day before they begin. This means we sometimes spend weeks unsure if we will make enough money to make rent or pay for groceries.

  • Proposed solution: Follow policy, not practice. Alternatively, we believe the Film Center could revise the previous recurring schedule policy so associates can once again rely on a consistent paycheck and maintain a healthy and sustainable work-life balance.

Issue at hand: We are not permitted to consume any food or drink in front of patrons, however, we have no break room.

  • Proposed solution: Turn one of the three rarely utilized on-site office spaces into a dedicated break room and GFCU office space.

Issue at hand: Associates who have been at the Film Center for over three years have yet to see a raise of any kind, and only one associate has recieved a pay raise since 2023.

  • Proposed solution: We would like all GFCU members to receive a pay raise upon the ratification of our contract with additional raises yearly, and, we would like Film Center employees to be considered for vacant positions. This will ensure that all full-time Film Center employees earn a living wage and are incentivized to stay at the Film Center longer.

Issue at hand: Because Ohio is an employment-at-will state, many friends and coworkers have been terminated for reasons that we believe to be unjust.

  • Proposed solution: Implement disciplinary tracks which must be followed before any associate is fired, ensuring that employees may only be terminated with “just-cause.”

Issue at hand: According to a policy implemented 07/01/2024, any employee who separates from the Film Center for any reason is banned from the property for six months. We spend our course of employment celebrating the Film Center as a vital and necessary asset to the Columbus film community, and an associate who amicably separates from the Film Center should not be forcibly severed from such a valuable beacon of community.

  • Proposed solution: Unless an associate is terminated for disciplinary reasons, we do not believe that they should face a ban from the Film Center.
